Building my Twitter account

As I mentioned in my last post, I am in the process of starting a retail jobs listings site to complement the popular Teen Job board that I already own. As a part of my marketing/outreach startegy, I have started a Twitter account to post the latestt jobs and retail jobs news. You can follow me @retailjobsusa .

I discovered a great new tool that will help me grow my Twitter followers fast. The site is called Twitter Friends and it is an easy way to get new followers. All you have to do is sign up, and when you follow pwople you get credits. Then you offer those credits to others so that they will follow you. It is a great idea and I have already gained 500 new followers in a week on my personal account and I will be looking to build my retail jobs account shortly.

As I have always said it is important to start looking for a summer job early and I am a bit surprised at how early some companies have started this year. I usually see activity around Christmas. Well, knowing that companies are already starting to receive applications it is important that you start preparing for your summer job now. It is never to early to start planning and get your teen resume ready.

With the summer months approaching and jobs for teens becoming more readily available, we have seen a spike in visitors as well as jobs. We are always looking for ways to improve our site and we recently conducted a audit of our site. We conducted surveys and these are the results of what you wanted most in a teen job board . This is both from the employers and candidates' perspective.

You said- Make it easy to purchase.- We have done that, it is simple to purchase job postings and resume access. You simply create a profile and you can pay through PayPal. The great part is that a regular listing is still FREE.

You said - Make your job board easy to use. We went through a complete re-design several months ago to make our site incredibly easy to use. You can search our jobs through categories or through a traditional search box. Our most recent jobs are always on the first page. We think it is the worst when job boards make you find the jobs.

You said- send me an email when a job matches- We listened and we now offer job alerts. Just set up a profile and we will send you an email when your perfect job becomes available.

Teen Job Scene- updates

I wanted to take a minute and provide an update about our teen job board . First off, Thank you all for your support. It is because of you guys that we have risen to the #1 teen jobs site in just under 3 months. That is simply amazing. If you were to go to Google and search for "teen jobs" you will see that we have made it to the front page of Google. It usually takes years to get there for such a competitive keyword phrase but the quality of our site and the hard work of our SEO and marketing team has payed off. The other sites in page 1 are SnagaJob, which is a part time job site, but for everyone from teens to seniors. There are also listings for GotaJob and TeenJobSection, these two sites are garbage sites that are linked to and affiliated with Snagajob and helps drive traffic to their site. The other sites are run by About.com which is a general site for everything under the sun. So again, Thanks for making us the #1 ranked teen job board.

I have one announcement, the free jobs listings will end on April 1. Employers, you still have over a week to get all your jobs listed for free.

I am sure everyone saw the coverage of the pilot who successfully landed his plane safely in the Hudson. He is a hero! Maybe his heroics have prompted some teens to consider a job as a pilot. A career in aviation has outstanding benefits. What are your plans this summer? Do you plan on gaining summer employment? Should my teen get a job?

My inbox is typically filled with questions from teen job seeker, but this morning I received an email from a concerned parent. The email was quite lengthy but the basic question was, should I allow my teenager to get an after school jobs?

Here is my answer to all parents of teenagers in America.

Yes. The research shows that teens that hold part time jobs benefit from the experience.

The lessons learned help foster strong work skills and build a strong foundation for later in life. Time management, confidence, financial management are just several of the skills that are developed.

I will say that it is important to emphasize that school comes first and if the grades start slipping, the job has got to go.

Attitude is everything

Have you ever heard the phrase, "Image is everything." Well, that is kind of true I guess...but in the employment world the phrase that pays is: "Attitude is everything." Having a negative attitude is the best way to not get the job and if you "fake it" on the interview and actually do land the job, your changes of getting promoted are not good with a negative attitude. Camp Lohikan has posted over 400 jobs! Now that is a lot of jobs. Teen Jobs Interview Tips

A couple of days ago, I wrote about the most common interview questions for teens. Today, I just wrote an article that I added to my teen jobs resource section about general interview advice for teens. The reality is a teen jobs interview is the same as any other job interview and the advice is pretty similar. There are however some differences that I would like to point out.

Be cool, but not too cool. What I mean is you want to be relazed and confident but you do not want to use slang or communicate like you would with your peers. Avoid using popular expressions like, "btw, I really want this job." This may be an exaggeration, but you get my point.

Do you have a mentor?

If you are in high school or college, it is a good idea to gain some work experience (you all ready knew that i'm sure) It is also a great idea to find yourself a mentor. A mentor is somebody who has more experience than you in the workplace. They will answer your questions and provide career advice. Kind of like your guidance counselor but with less of a case load. Most guidance counselors have hundreds and even thousands of kids they are responsible for. Parents are good too but you can gain more insight from an outside.

My cousin Mike, who is 13 asked me over the holidays if I knew of any jobs he can get. Being in the teen jobs arena, I leveled with him and said not really. Our website caters to teens and hones in on the 14-21 year old demographic. We have never posted a job for a 13 year old. I decided to do some reserch on the topic for Mike and wanted to share with you as well..

I am often asked if a cover letter is needed when applying to teen jobs or summer jobs, and my answer is always, Youbetcha. Well it used to be plain old Yes. but thanks to Ms. Palin, I really enjoy saying Youbetcha!.

Ok, so how do you write a cover letter you ask..

It is actually pretty easy to write a cover letter and here are some tips to help you out.

Keep it simple-

3 Paragraphs should do the trick

Make sure your phone number and email are there

Make sure to tell the reader why you would be good for the job

We just finished an email poll that received over 2,300 replies and the results are overwhelming. 64% of all respondents chose lifeguard jobs as the ultimate dream job for summer. Second place was summer camp counselor and a summer internship in a chosen field came in third. All three of these summer jobs are very competive and in the case of lifeguarding, recquire certification and a lot of training and 'know how"

In this terrible economy, there are older workers coming out of retirement that need money, new college grads that can't get work, illegal immigrants ...

We here at TeenJobscene.com are embarking on a serious undertaking. We will be starting to assemble a list of the "100 Best Companies for Teens" We are in the process of determining which criteria will be used to judge the companies by. We know some of them will be:

Do i need working papers?

I was recently emailed this question by a 14 year old job seeker and I thought I would answer it publicly because I am sure others have the same question. The answer is it depends on what state you live in. There is no federal requirement s but some states do require it.

Here is another doom and gloom article about the downfall of the teen jobs market. The title asks, "Does anybody even care?" what a stupid thing to write...of course people care, I care and I am sure there are millions of other teen that care as well. The bottom line is this...yes, it is harder for a teen to get a job now then it was 5 years ago....but I think the jobs are out there you just have to find them.

I came across this headline when i deleted old emails, this was from June of this past summer 2008. Even though there is snow on the ground, I can not help but think how the troubled econony is going to impact teen in 2009.

Folks, I must be honest, it aint gonna be pretty...

My advice is to start looking early. I would recommend in March at the latest. Most companies wrap up hiring at the end of April.

Utilize all the resources you have, network online and offline. be creative. and of course check with the online teen jobs boards they not only have job listings but tips and resources to help you edge out the competetion....

As a follow up to yesterday's post , I thought it would make sense to talk about the job application. Many employers will not require you to have a resume (especially if it is for a summer job) but most (if not all) will want you to fill out an application. There are some basic things to keep in mind, starting with the fact that the employer will judge you based on how you fill out the application. So remember the following:

keep it G rated (especially the email eaddy)
Spelling Counts
Include extra curricular activities like: student council, sports, etc
Do not include hobbies (ie, World of War Craft, etc..)
Do Not lie (this will always come back to bite you in the you know where)
